I read an article that contrasted the melodrama to the tragedy.  According to the author, the melodrama pits the protagonist against the adversary, and the audience feels the tension of the fight, not knowing who will win.

In the tragedy, there is a character flaw in the protagonist that, however sympathetic, dooms him to ultimate defeat, despite his heroic efforts.

Sometimes our cases have the feel of a Shakespearean tragedy.
