June '08 supplemental-gas costs |
|
|
Now that we have seen gas prices once again hitting new highs, just what is the real effect on a cost per mile basis? The following table shows your cost per mile for fuel, at different pump prices and different fuel efficiency levels. | | | | Table of Cost in Cents per Mile for Various Gas Prices and Vehicle Efficiencies | | | | Cost per Gallon: | 2.00 | 2.50 | 3.00 | 3.50 | 4.00 | 4.50 | 5.00 | | | | | | | | | | | 20 | mpg | 10 | 13 | 15 | 18 | 20 | 23 | 25 | | 25 | mpg | 8 | 10 | 12 | 14 | 16 | 18 | 20 | | 30 | mpg | 7 | 8 | 10 | 12 | 13 | 15 | 17 | | 35 | mpg | 6 | 7 | 9 | 10 | 11 | 13 | 14 |
On a cost per mile basis, a jump from $3 per gallon up to $5 per gallon results in a cost per mile increase of a dime or less for a modern vehicle. |

President’s Message: Hands Free Cellphones July 1, 2008 marks the effective date for the new California laws regarding the use of cellphones in automobiles. As of that date, it is illegal for the driver to use a handheld wireless telephone while operating a motor vehicle. Motorists over 18 may use a “hands-free device”. Motorists under 18 may not use a “hands-free device". This applies to out of state drivers as well as California residents. It does not apply to passengers. Drivers may use a bluetooth enabled earpiece, but may not have both ears covered. If you don’t already have a hands free cellphone for your car, now is the time to go buy one. |

President’s Message: 2008 CDR Users Conference: Allow me to pose a hypothetical construct. You were driving your car at night on the way home after a long day. Traffic was light in the 30mph zone and you waited in the left turn lane for the light to change. You saw a break in the traffic and accelerated. Suddenly you were broadsided by an oncoming car. The police find you at fault for an unsafe turn. Your only defense is that you thought you had time and the other guy must have been speeding. The other driver, a teenager driving his dad’s new Impala, admits he was in a hurry to get home, but says he wasn’t speeding when you pulled out in front of him. An accident reconstruction puts his speed between 28 and 33 mph at impact. Are you out of luck? The answer may lie in the CDR. |
