Mr. Starksen began his professional career as a Mechanical Engineer in the late 1950s, designing oil field production equipment. His previous experience as a machinist and auto mechanic added to his education. After obtaining his B.S. in Engineering in 1963, he obtained his license as a Professional Engineer in Mechanical Engineering in 1967.

During his career he has designed:

  • Mechanical products for the oil field industry, including studies in friction and wear, materials, stress analysis, and failure analysis,
  • Medical (electronic blood flow measurement) instrumentation,
  • Ground support equipment for military air controls,
  • Commercial and industrial products for combustion controls,
  • Deep sea diving systems, and deep sea survival equipment,
  • Irrigation controls,
  • Satellite navigation electronic systems packaging for marine applications.

His experience and education have provided a broad basis for evaluating the design and performance of mechanical devices, utilizing his knowledge of materials, manufacturing techniques and processes, and failure analysis.

Beginning in 1982, Mr. Starksen has provided his expertise and services to the Legal and Insurance community as a Forensic Engineer. During this time, he has expanded his expertise to include slips, trips and falls of all kinds, and he deals with both premises liability and product liability; the latter based upon his extensive and wide-ranging industrial and design experience. He has testified hundreds of times at depositions, arbitrations, and at trials, utilizing his wide range of technical expertise.
